Brushes & Melting Plastic,
May 3, 2008
By Rick192from CT
"What I thought was a good value was not. Only used this belt sander a few times when the Brushes became so hot they melted the plastic cage that surrounds the motor. Everything inside is plastic. Bad design but I gues thats why it's only 70$"

GREAT VALUE SANDER!!,
December 30, 2007
By Dukhuntr21from Redding, CA
"My dad bought this sander for occasional use. I don't think he's used it more than once, but I have used it at least a couple dozen times. This sander has probably gotten more use than it was designed for as an entry level sander at only $60. The dust collection system works great and is quick and easy to empty. I too, have had some trouble with the tracking. But this is not something that would stop me from buying this product. The tracking is adjusted by a little spring with a screw and so should not be compared to higher-end models. All you have to do is run the sander for a second or two holding it upside-down so you can see the belt and turn the tracking screw back and forth until the belt centers and stays. This is a great sander for the money, especially on sale. If you need to use it everyday then get a better sander and stop complaining about minor tracking adjustments. I would recommend this belt sander to any occasional or weekend woodworker."

"Like other reviewers I cannot get the tracking right. The tracking mechanism is based on a spring which seems like a poor choice to me. I had a look at some competitive products and they seem to use so type of rigid mechanism. I would love to hear from others that have managed to use the sander successfully, specifically how they managed to adjust it and get it to stay adjusted...."

"I got this sander as a gift. The belt didn't track correctly from the start even after repeated adjustments. I adjusted the tracking as described in the manual but as soon as the sander touched the surface I was trying to sand, the belt would move and either get shredded or I would have to stop sanding and readjust the tracking about every 10 seconds. After fighting with it for two or three total hours over several attempts to use it and tearing up several belts, the sander died and no longer runs. Since I got it as a gift, I don't have the receipt and they won't take it back or exchange it. Not that I would want another one of this model anyway. I have been happy with every other Craftsman tool I own until this one. I can't recommend this to anyone."

"I prefer to buy the Professional sub-brand when there is a choice. Although in this case the professional sander was 150$ comparing to this one for 60. I didn't need variable speed so i opted for this sander.
I'm so happy with that tool! It's really powerful, convenient, had no issues described by previous reviewers. I really recommend it!"

"I bought this thing about 8 months ago and right from the start there were tracking problems. I would let it run and set the tracking then when I put a load on it, the belt went all over the place. I tried setting the tracking under a load and the same thing happened. I tried everything and should have brought it back. I have used it twice since I bought it and have had nothing but problems. Today I went to use it for the second time on my deck railing and it worked fine for about 1/4 of the job then issues started. Also I noticed that the plate under the belt is cheap and worn out and needs to be replaced after only 2 uses. I guess you get what you pay for."

"I have major tracking problems with this sander. I get the belt to track straight under no load, but as soon as I gently set it down on my piece to sand the tracking slowly, then gradually increases going off track. In the six months of ownership and 3 times I have used this sander I never have been able to even remotely finish sanding anything. I'm very disappointed in the purchase and cannot recommend this product. Maybe I have a fluke based on the other comments but all it does is sit in its case on my shelf looking pretty."

"The best recommendation I can give this is when my 10 year old Craftsman sander died after heavy home use, I immediately ordered another to replace it. Very pleased with the purchase and expect this one to last another 10 years."

"This sander works better then any you will find at this price. It truly works as well or better then the $120 sander I previously owned. Very heavy and sturdy yet it's two controls allow instant belt replacement and alignment. I am so grateful I purchased this sander and would recommend it to anyone with small to medium projects. I was able to sand the entire staircase in no time! What seemed like a one month job with the electric hand sander I started with, this made Childs play out of this task. Only one belt (80 grit) is included, so I was glad I purchased additional belts. With 8 amps, this is the sander for just about any home project, without breaking your bank account!"

"After researching several belt sanders, I decided on this model. It has the weight to help stabilize the tool while sanding. All you have to do is let the tool do the work and pay attention to the belt tracking. The user will need to take some time to initially track the belt and you will need to continue to pay attention to the tracking. However, I have found that this belt sander is better at holding it's track better than other, more expensive models.
Surprisingly, the dust collector works better than I thought it would. Most of my Craftsman tools' dust collectors are all but worthless (which is not a big issue for me anyway). But, this tool, I have found has an excellent dust collector, especially for a sander which one would think would make a tremendous mess."

"I have many of Sears products in my shop. I use the 3 X 21 belt sander a lot on some jobs I do. For the money I found that this one has better ability for the price compaired to many others I have bought over the years working with wood and sanding. The weight helps with not needing to bear down on the things I am making as with other sanders you need to use your weight to get the sander to cut into the wood. This way the bottom of the sander is leaving a better finish by using the weight of the machine this keeps the surface level after sanding. The ability to sand right up to the edge of the sanding belt helps a lot when you need to sand a section that has a backing. Depending on the paper you use and your experiance you can do more for less with this particular sander than some that cost upwards of $120. All you need is time to learn how to use the sander right and you will find this one is a great sander and value at this price. Les"
