Don't bother or you'll be hot and bothered,
September 3, 2008
By Sweatingstillfrom Elizabethtown, NY
"If you want to throw away a hundred bucks, buy this unit! I purchased this unit in June of this year (2008). Got it home and installed it with no problems. The first 4 weeks it performed flawlessly. I have the unit in the window of a 12' by 15' room and, at first, it kept the room cool very nicely. Now it runs, the fan blows, I can hear the compressor come on and...barely cool air coming out of the unit! I cleaned the filter every week and when it died I vacuumed off the coils, made sure there were no bent or deformed fins...all to no avail. I figure I spent $25 a week to stay cool! Add it up and that's around $450.00 for a single cooling season. That's a big waste in my book. Don't buy!!!"

"Best window air conditioner I've purchased because it cools quickly, operates quietly, and cools more square footage than the manufacturer specifies. My apartment is 650 sq. ft. and it keeps it cool enough during hot weather with Mode/Temp knob set at the midpoint (5) or below.
Great A/C for the price!"

Cold as ICE!!,
July 12, 2008

"I bought this unit in Texas right after Hurricane Rita. That was one of the hottest summers I've been through. My landlord didn't repair the duct work for my central air in my appartment. So, my bedroom was always hot. When I installed this unit and ran it all night, there was so much fog on the windows of my bedroom you could't see out of them. Plus, me and my wife had to sleep with blankets on the bed. I reccomend this unit for a small room and I reccomend you get the service plan when purchasing. After two years of operation the coolant will need to be recharged by a technician. Over all, excellent customer satisfaction on this unit."

Cool in MN,

"I bought this unit yesterday to prepare for the long hot humid week ahead. We only had $100.00 to spare so I bought this because it was in our range, and a good namebrand. It is light so it was easy to get home. Installation took 30 minutes and was simple. This unit is MONEY! My bedroom was cool in about 10 min. It's the same amount of noise that a fan would make on low. I slept cool as a cucumber last night! I will be getting another one next payday for sure."

Great Little AC,
July 3, 2008
By h2opolofrom Los Angeles
"Before buying this unit, I had a Frigidaire 5,000 BTU air conditioner. Because of my small window size, I needed something really portable. Unfortunately, I wasted my money on the Frigidaire first when I should have bought the Kenmore.
Besides the Kenmore being cheaper, it's overall a better unit. It's cooler and much more quiet. Ok, yes the Frigidaire has a digital display, temperature settings, timer settings, 3 fan speeds, etc, but it doesn't do that good of job cooling. It cycles it's compressor, so when it's on, the air coming out is freezing (5-10 minutes), but when it's off (5-10 minutes), the air coming out isn't cool at all, basically negating all the cooling it did. The Kenmore has consistently cool air, even though it too cycles it's compressor. It might not be freezing cold, but it's consistently the same cool temp whether the compressor is on or off, so it cools much more efficiently and effectively.
I'm also always concerned about the noise my unit makes OUTSIDE of my apartment, as I don't want to disrupt my neighbors. The main reason I got rid of the Frigidaire was because outside, it made way too much noise. Besides the usual noise of an air conditioner, it would clink and clank, whereas the Kenmore has a very subtle and monotone hum.
Another difference between the two units, is that the Kenmore has some sort of drainage. For some reason, the Frigidaire didn't really have a very reliable way for the water to drain, which meant that I had to pull it out of my window and tip it in order for the water to be drained properly.
The ONLY thing that could make the Kenmore unit better, would be for Kenmore to include some sort of air deflector. While many people praise that this unit has upward facing vents, I would have preferred them to be forward facing. I would have purchased another model with forward facing vents, but this was the only one that would fit my window. I purchased a plastic air deflector and some double-sided tape at my local hardware store, threw it on the unit, and now it's even more amazing.
The Kenmore unit is far and above the best little unit I've owned. It's simple, easy to install, and works great. I got this unit to only cool off my bed area while I sleep, however, it actually does a pretty decent job of cooling off my entire apartment, which is about 800 square feet, way above what it's rated for. And for the price, 5 stars all the way."

Three strikes...Kenmore's OUT!,
June 29, 2008
By CoolIsGoodfrom Duluth, Minnesota
"I am VERY disappointed with this unit. I had one of this same model and it died at the end of last summer. I bought a new one to replace it, installed it in the window (I have to haul it up a LADDER to install it...) and the fan was making a HORRIBLE noise. So I brought it back (climbed with it back down the LADDER). They exchanged it. I made the warehouse guy check it before I even took it home. The first one he checked? Same thing!!! He "checked" another one which I took home (climbed the LADDER with it again!) and this new one makes a horrible gurgling noise when the compressor is running. Three strikes. I'm getting my money back. I expected much, much more from Kenmore! I would be willing to pay a little more to have something I didn't have to keep bringing back to the store. I think I may have a stroke climbing down the LADDER AGAIN with this one!"

Short life span,
June 17, 2008
By BamBamOfAtlantafrom Marietta / Atlanta GA
"5 year warranty on sealed parts and it ONLY lasted 2 seasons. Based on others here, that is not unusual. Called Sears and they said it would be about a month (middle of July) before they could look at it. They said it was a $50 service call. “If” the tech determines it is the sealed system, no charge. Other wise it is $50 plus cost of repair. Ummm … it was only about $80 on sale. That makes the warranty a role of the dice based on a tech’s opinion. Just consider it to be a short life throw away air-conditioner that will probably make it 2 seasons or more with “Luck”. Noise is not to bad."

"This little AC is as cold as ice, quiet and absolutely perfect for a bedroom. The best feature is the air blows up toward the ceiling where hot air accumulates, and not on you while lying in bed. I wish Kenmore would add this "upward" type of airflow to all their ACs. Good EER rating and colder than an older model Kenmore of 5700 BTUs."

June 9, 2008
By jr123from Raleigh, NC
"I just bought this ac a couple days ago and when I was at the store the sears guy told me its only meant for a small room and it wouldn't do much. Well I hooked this baby up and it took a little while but it cooled down my entire downstairs, livingroom, kitchen, and hallway, probably about 700 sqft. and it's only rated to do about 100. Yes you can buy a larger ac and it will do a better job but if you're short on cash this one is a fifth the price and it can get you through a 100 degree heat wave if your central air goes out. :)"

"New York City is really hot right now, I could not stand the heat and humidity. I just bought the AC and so far is pretty good. I have a small bedroom as most people in the city, around 10 x 15. So go for it!.. It is a little noisy but for the price.. who cares!!, my street is too noisy anyway. I bought it early today. I saw 5 more people buying the same AC as me.. So hurry! and get one for yourself!"

From other reviews i have read some people have the same problems"

"I bought this last summer after a major heat wave. It sat in our garage until we pulled it out in June to install it in my daughters room. This unit really gets cold. She has to turn it down and snuggle under the covers at night. It can be a little noisy sometimes, but no more so than a fan. Most of the summer she has been running it 24/7. I am planning to buy another one for our kitchen to replace the useless portable AC we now have in there."

"ok, i just got this AC two days ago. i bought it because it's cheap and affordable.. i didnt know that the compressor was going to be this loud when i had the fan turned high.. another thing that bothers me is the drain hole in the back... every now and then i have to tip my AC out to drain the water out.. sometimes if the water gets too congested inside, the AC cant cool. besides those two downsides, i love this AC, it really cools the room very quickly.. i will not buy another one of this AC if i have too.. now i always have my AC fan turned low........"
